Petra van Harte

In the digitally constructed and partly photographic images of Petra van Harte, the city that once may have represented a different future for the mass appears now as interlinked territories and public spaces which are controlled and watched by invisible forms of surveillance. Although it is important to see how the combined interest in the role of surveillance and the invisibility of the neglected sectors of the city form an origin for the themes in her pictures; it is a flattening out of meaning that is evidence in many of her different scenes and becomes most noticeable, The result of this flattening of meaning is the understanding that fragments can supersede narrative and that fragments would anyway be the most natural memory of the city’s mass
