2022Muddy Pink Dinosaur Noorderlicht Studio Groningen In the spring of 2021, Carlier was the first artist in residence in the Noorderlicht Studio. Using it as a base, she turned the city into her studio; collecting objects and stories, making interventions in the public space, approaching Groningers who are creatively active themselves and asking them to lend her their work. Carlier’s criterion was that these works of art were ‘made from an intrinsic need to create, and not from a desire to be an artist’. This flexible attitude inherent in creativity – breaking free from one’s own conceptions, being able to see everyday things in a new light – is precisely what Carlier’s artistic practice is about. All her ‘studies’, art finds, and new work inspired by this will be brought together in a playful mix in ‘MUDDY PINK DINOSAUR’. Carlier challenges the viewer to look differently at their immediate surroundings, at the world and at art. www.noorderlicht.com/programma/muddy-pink-dinosaur-2

2017Only Jesus Saves LhGWR The Hague, Netherlands LhGWR is very proud to present the exhibition Only Jesus Saves by Sarah Carlier (1981, BE). For the exhibition Carlier has made ten new video works that will come together in a new site-specific multi-channel video installation. Her residency in the United States and the rapidly changing dynamics in our Western society have a visible impact on the social engagement that characterizes her work. The narratives in Sarah Carlier’s video works stem from the friction found between our predilection for tradition and the inevitable changes in our modest day-to-day existence. Delving into such substantive matters about life’s meaning and futility, her light approach chimes with the absurdist undertones of contemporary Belgian art. Carlier provokes you to consider our current zeitgeist in which fear of the unknown seems to be a common thread. Her multi-screen video installations interweave diverging narratives into new forms. Video scenes with underlying cynicism are interchanged with those of light-hearted humour, each serving as a counterpart to put things in perspective, sharpening the work’s focus. Like a visual symphony autonomous video works converge in a larger entity, drawing striking and layered parallels with the rhythms of the everyday. www.lhgwr.com/sarah-carlier-only-jesus-saves/ Solo

2014LET US BE CHEERFUL LhGWR The Hague, Netherlands Sarah Carlier has spent the past two years producing thirteen new video works that will be presented as a symphony, coming together in a half an hour video installation. With her work Carlier researches the ways we attempt to place culturally rooted traditions and customs into our modern day existence. This leads to poetic and humoristic mise-en-scenes, in which the friction related to change becomes tangible. Her video works balance between stillness and movement. They are cinematic series of images of a photographic nature that she calls moving pictures. For a long time her work had a documentary point of departure, but in her new works she addresses the viewer directly. This leads to more insights into her own perception and interpretation of the subject. www.lhgwr.com/sarah-carlier-let-us-be-cheerfull/ Solo

Haags Organisch Openlucht Volks Museum HOOVM museum Haagse Bos, Den Haag, Netherlands www.instagram.com/hoovm_museum/ (spring 2020) On her daily walk through the Haagse Bos in The Hague, Carlier encountered fascinating sculptures of branches, tree trunks and moss, which appeared out of nowhere, disappeared and then reappeared in a different spot. The constructions reminded her of the Folk Art of the American Deep South, which she had come across during her travels in 2017 and 2019 and are typified by spontaneity. Were these woodland sculptures created out of simple pastimes, or could she see them, like the work of the Folk Artists, as a creative necessity, a breathing space in a time that was so oppressive and frightening for everyone? Carlier says, “I thought of Joseph Beuys’ Jeder Mensch ist ein Künstler and decided to document everything on my route. Soon I began to play along with the invisible creators. I marked branches and waited for someone or something to move them. I spied on people and kept a diary of each construction. There was something comforting about it. Despite all our differences, we all feel the need to express our creativity, play and create a place where we feel safe.” Eventually she named her walking route The Hague Organic Open Air Folk Museum and started organising tours.
