COLOUR is an extensive database with detail photos of human skin. Clothes, jewelry, scars and tattoos play an important role in these images. The photos are taken on various locations, from amateur football clubs to colleges and from community centers to museums. The database represents diverse skin colours, different ages and cultural backgrounds. Photos from the project form the basis of the workshop Algorithmic Thinking with Photography that Johan Nieuwenhuize developed in collaboration with the lectorate Philosophy and Professional Practice of The Hague University of Applied Sciences. Background This project started with a fascination for the way people experience skin colour through photography. In the popular scientific book The Vision Revolution, Mark Changizi shows how different skin types reflect colours and how all skin types contain almost the same amount of these colours. But if the measurable difference in skin colour is so small, why does the subject have such a polarising effect on our society?

In recent years, many specialists have worked on the thorough restoration of the Pieter Teyler House Get to know the crafts and people who have ensured a beautiful result. Commissioned by the museum, artist and photographer Johan Nieuwenhuize was the first artist in residence of the Pieter Teyler House. He portrayed the last two years of the restoration. The aim of this project was twofold. First of all, it was an art assignment: Nieuwenhuize was given a free hand to take his own photos in the house for a book. He also made documentary photos to record the progress of the restoration.

In times of corona is a multi platform, multi-disciplinary collaborative project which combines photography, art, design and data science. With the project Johan Nieuwenhuize explores public space in his home city of The Hague, next to the online space of social media. With his highly detailed images he focusses on ways the general public and businesses deal with the pandemic in general and with social distancing in particular. Parallel to his photography he collects #corona images posted on Instagram by the worldwide online community. The AI (artificial intelligence) installation of the project shows combinations of pictures from Nieuwenhuize’s database with images posted on Instagram. An algorithm gathers #corona images posted on the social media platform, live and continuously, while an automatic filtering algorithm makes new combinations of images from the database with images made by the artist. In the book combinations of the two perspectives are being made manually, by designer Welmer Keesmaat. With in times of corona a new narrative emerges, a dialogue between the local perspective of the artist and personal visual stories from a wide range of people from various countries and with different cultural backgrounds.

2022Pluralism Nederlandse School voor Openbaar Bestuur The Hague, Netherlands For this project Johan Nieuwenhuize visited the building of The Netherlands School of Public Administration (NSOB) and five buildings of political, legal and administrative institutions; The Senate (Eerste Kamer), The House of Representatives (Tweede Kamer), The Council of State (Raad van State), Ministry of Justice and Security (Ministerie van Justitie en Veiligheid) and the City Hall of The Hague (Stadhuis van Den Haag). The resulting artist book shows detailed images of the floors in these buildings. By drawing attention to this everyday subject, Nieuwenhuize seeks to reflect on the playing field upon which democracy and the rule of law work to protect and support pluralism. The artist book ‘Pluralisme’ consists of four leporellos in a banderol. The project was commissioned by The Netherlands School of Public Administration (NSOB). www.johannieuwenhuize.nl/work/pluralisme-2022/ finished
