Marten’s artistic practice suggests and speculates alternative models of allowing communicating knowledge and experiences by forming platforms in which for a brief moment stories, which are not yet governed by the primacy of reason can be brought forth. As a result the search for the transcendental is born in a space where play compels reality to surrender the dogma of its unconditional validity in order to flirt with possibility.
In her work Martens tends to examine the formation of beliefs and modes of discourse in a semi anthropological and playfully associative approach, in which the concept of estranged history is contemplated. Through the investigation of objects, images and symbols, the historical narrative and thought processes which have led our human development is questioned and furthermore altered to challenge the streams of information which have led to the conventions and principles of our norms and behaviours today.

2018Water on the sun Alkovi Gallery Helsinki, Finland A collaborative exhibition by artist Alexandra Martens Serrano and curator Jussi Koitela; Water On The Sun was an offspring of their long term project Dragged Ways of Knowledge. Through a playful approach and the act of associating use and meaning, both real and fictitious; this presentation suggested certain artworks and enigmatic objects as vessels of information capable of transmission and transformation. 2018Inbetween STROOM The Hague, Netherlands In May 2018, Alexandra Martens Serrano spent a month as artist-in-residence at Deltaworkers in New Orleans (USA), a nomadic space founded by curator Maaike Gouwenberg and curator / artist Joris Lindhout. Here she focused her artistic research on the concept of 'domesticated objects': objects / images that are physically and mentally appropriated in new ways after long-term interaction with people. With the research and the resulting work she reflected on the possibilities of objects becoming vehicles of information and knowledge beyond the human authority. Ideas belonging to 'non-rational' thought systems were examined in relation to the unique colonized history of New Orleans and its contemporary mix of cultures and languages.
