Binnen mijn werk creëer ik verhalen, beelden en ruimtes die zich altijd op een bepaald grensgebied dienen af te spelen. Een spanningsveld tussen dromen en waken, fysieke- en mentale ruimte, façade en interieur, persoonlijk herinnering en symbool. Dit komt tot stand vanuit een wisselwerking tussen alledaagse observaties, uitgebreide research en referenties naar het medium cinema. Terugkerend is een sterke interesse voor het begrip macht, dat bij elke poging tot verdieping of definiëring alleen maar ongrijpbaarder lijkt te worden. Ik onderzoek hoe de totstandkoming van macht zich heeft ontwikkeld en vooral wat voor invloed dit kan hebben op de psychische gesteldheid van een individu of groep.

2024In Tall Buildings 1646 The Hague, Netherlands At 1646, audiences could walk through carefully crafted film sets. Spaces that make us feel the tension between these opaque financial worlds and our private space, where we find ourselves on the edge of dreams and reality. The exhibition In Tall Buildings is part of the long-term feature film project 5000 Miles that Demper has been working on for the past few years. It is a film that is un-traditionally made in small parts, with each exhibition building on the larger narrative. The main character, Donny works at a large asset manager company. Inspired on a real life example, this company uses an electronic system that manages almost a tenth of the world’s wealth. By using complex algorithms, data based on past events and often very personal information from millions of people, it predicts market risks and moves money from its clients accordingly, keeping the financial market stable. “In such a world, real change is currently impossible because an algorithm predicts and corrects any change or instability,” says Demper. Deze achtste editie laat onder het motto ‘Revealing new art,’ niet eerder getoonde werken van opkomende kunstenaars zien. Op de kunstbeurs is te zien hoe de kunstenaars een balans proberen te vinden tussen de ‘verkoopbaarheid’ en de ‘eigenheid’ van de werken. Soms leidt dit tot werk dat wat braaf is, soms tot werk dat verrast omdat de kunstenaars proberen binnen het format van een beurs de grenzen wat op te rekken. Stella Kummer bezocht Unfair, waar humor, lichtheid en samenwerking gebruikt worden om tegengewicht te geven aan het uniforme en fragmentarische karakter van de gemiddelde kunstbeurs.
