Sam D. P. Hersbach and Vita Soul Wilmering tell the story of a man without a memory, wandering through a gigantic building full of traces of art-related objects and strange figures. While being on the run for the slowly rising water, he tries to find out about his past. BAÄL was born during a lockdown on the attic of a studio building, where two artists worked in isolation. The two artists, painter and filmmaker, combine in this radio play their both art practices and imagination to search for ways how to tell a story. The History of the name Baäl has many different connotations. It could refer to a God, a Devil, a King or a lord and had different appearances in areas around the Mediterranean sea during the antiquity. In a dreamlike setting, where reality intertwines with imagination, the memoryless protagonist of this radio play depends on endless possible interpretations of whom he is, by the ones he meets on his journey. Via a world that only exists through sound, he explores the meaning of the link between storytelling and heritage.

2024Fancy Some Friction, Honey? 33 Year Cokkie Snoei Fancy Some Friction, Honey? Rotterdam, Netherlands For over thirty years, Rotterdam gallerist Cokkie Snoei played an important role in the city’s artistic climate. Shown at Kunsthal Rotterdam from Saturday 14 October, the exhibition ‘Fancy Some Friction, Honey?’, presents the work of 33 artists personally selected by Cokkie Snoei and represented by her gallery. The selected works reflect the quirky choices Cokkie has constantly made since the start of her career, her personal views, and the spirit of the times during the various decades. According to Cokkie, art should be funny, bizarre, perhaps even ugly, but never boring or predictable. For 33 years, Cokkie Snoei and her gallery had a major impact on the artistic and cultural climate of Rotterdam and beyond. After working as a copywriter and fundraiser, she established her own art agency in 1985. She started out with a portfolio of twelve Rotterdam artists whose work she wanted to bring to the attention of entrepreneurs in search of high-quality art for their office spaces. Although successful, Cokkie found no satisfaction in this approach. In 1989, she boldly opened an ambitiously set-up gallery in the Rotterdam street Witte de Withstraat, where she was able to operate as a connecting factor and actually help artists get ahead. Against the grain At a time when photography was not yet taken seriously as an artform, Cokkie was the first gallerist in the Netherlands to show work by now internationally renowned artists like Nan Goldin, Claude Cahun, and Larry Clark. Presenting a mix of established and new, unknown artists, she invariably selected bold and outspoken work that ventured beyond the beaten path. Many of these artists reflected the rough edges of society. Her focus was on controversial subjects such as sexuality, gender identity, and power relations. The art had to go against the grain, provoke, and excite, as well as challenge preconceived ideas of what art should be. This is clearly palpable in the exhibition ‘Fancy Some Friction, Honey?’, which will show photographs, films, drawings, paintings, sculptures, and installations by 33 artists, covering 33 years of Cokkie Snoei’s gallery. Artists featured in ‘Fancy Some Friction, Honey?’ Andres Serrano, Benny Merris, Bert Sissingh, Bianca Sistermans, Boris Mikhailov, C.A. Wertheim, Carolee Schneemann, Claude Cahun, Douglas Kolk, Heike Kati Barath, Jason Fox, Koen Taselaar, Koes Staassen, Larry Clark, Lee Miller, Lily van der Stokker, Madeleine Berkhemer, Markus Selg, Michael Bauer, Nan Goldin www.kunsthal.nl/nl/plan-je-bezoek/tentoonstellingen/fancy-some-friction-honey/ Group

2022Summer show maurits van de laar Gallery The Hague The Summershow features work by regular and new artists of the gallery. Sam Hersbach (1995) exhibits for the first time, his paintings have intriguing titles like (Hospital) Cleaningservice to fight unbalanced critters, amidst horsemen, or Clumsy catfish hunting a mysterious horse rider. They are boldly painted in flashy colours, presenting figures and animals that loom between dome shaped mountains like in a dream or a hallucination. Besides shows smaller drawings Susanna Inglada (1983) shows a large collaged work: Turning the Tables in which two women are reading and a third writes with the braids of the one above her. By reading and writing they acquire knowledge and shift the balance of power between men and women. Jantien Jongsma (1965) once described her work as a self invented folklore, with lots of details and a subjective use of perspective. She now shows among others works on paper of birds embedded in a lavish natural habitat. Ronald Versloot (1964) made series of new pastels in which he builds up the image with a minimum of lines. In Dip In he creates a rotating movement that starts in the circles where the diver will hit the water. The arch of branches above and blue waves below enhance this movement. Dan Zhu (1985) made new work on paper. In The Lightning she summons up a dreamlike nocturnal world with a giant moth. From its wings tiny lines run ending in orange dots that launch small bolts of lightning. Like seeds spreading new life they invigorate the nightly blue skies. mauritsvandelaar.nl/en/summershow-3/ Group

2020Songesand Gomulan Gallery Amsterdam, Netherlands Duo show with Julius Stibbe. An exhibition with Stibbe his paintings, which are a bit more abstracted than mine, and my paintings and drawings. Stibbe and I have both figurative elements, however Stibbe is more abstract than me, which I really liked because of the fact I just did a show with Ralf Kokke, which is mostly more figurative than my work. In this was I tried to look at abstraction and recognition in my paintings. I was also really nice to do a show with julius stibbe, because we have know each other since art school, but never did show together. So for the first time our work was in a direct conversation instead of just our persons. www.gomulangallery.com Duo
