Sonopotentia is a piece for prepared pianos and microphones. It explores primary sonic phenomenon such as feedback and resonance. The pianos are loaded with 4x18-inch speakers creating reverb tanks/resonators. The confines of the space combined with the pianos create a feedback chamber peaking at 150dB. Performed by our co-conspirator G. Atabek The live performance was presented in VOLKSBAR!; a one-off space constructed within the Graduation Show. In the bar a special cocktail called "Higgins" was served, made with liqueur infused with the wood reclaimed from the two pianos. Photos by Charlotte Brand

2021Between Here and There Pulchri Studio The Hague, Netherlands Gökay Atabek (TU), born in Istanbul, is a media artist and musician. He is a member of the enigmatic Volksamt! Over the years they broke no less than 4 ribs during numerous performances. Harold de Bree (NL) makes work that often has an industrial and/or military appearance. Heavy, filthy, colossal and dangerous. It is work that can be regarded as a repetition and or reconstruction of parts of history. The kinetic sculptures of Pim Kerssemakers (NL) are often created intuitively. Movement is an important part of the story of the work. This is the result of a playful investigation into movements and the effect they can have on different objects. Oliver Labs (DE) is a mathematician and artist. His works are not only related to mathematics, but their forms are even determined by mathematical formulas. Oliver's main creative process usually begins on a sheet of paper, followed by a long period in front of a computer trying to figure out the details of the formula he wants to use. The final artwork is usually created by high-end machines using laser technology or 3D printers. The primary motivation for the creative process of Alexander Zaklynsky (USA, IS) lies in breaking through the two- and three-dimensional fields of traditional art into a fourth dimension. The aim is to provide these fields with aesthetic resonance. Expression, abstraction, representation and spatiality come together in his work through meditative explorations of perspective, color and structure. This exhibition was made possible thanks to Stroom Den Haag. Group

2021Destilaat #22 Extrapool Nijmegen, Netherlands Extrapool visits the graduation exhibitions of the Dutch art academies every year. What keeps these young artists busy? How do they shape their work at the end of their academy days? In the summer of 2020, well-known circumstances made graduation complicated. Academies presented their 'graduates' later or only online. We would have liked to have Destilaat take place physically, unfortunately that turned out not to be possible. The strength of Destilaat is the working period that takes place prior to the exhibition. Fortunately, Extrapool was able to offer this to the artists in a safe way in a modified form. From 23 April 20:00 will there be a digital presentation available. Destilaat #22 presents the work of the following young artists: Angelique Farge (Amsterdam) https://angelaf.org/ Gökay Atabek (The Hague) www.volksamt.org Judith Reijnders (Maastricht) http://www.judithreijnders.com/ WONNE (Arnhem) http://lala.cool/home.html Dave Fransz (Enschede) https://www.davefransz.com Goretti Pombo (Rotterdam) https://gorettipombo.com/ Eugenie Boon (The Hague) https://www.eugenieboon.com Daan Mulder (Den Bosch) https://www.daan-mulder.com/ extrapool.nl/weekend/extrapool-weekend-destillaat22/ Group

2019Music For Contemporary Audience Nr. 74 - The End the Balcony The Hague, Netherlands For its 18th exhibition at Herenstraat 14, The Balcony has selected Gökay Atabek‘s proposal through an Open Call. Gökay Atabek presents ‘Music For Contemporary Audience nr 74 - The End’. The artist dug a grave for himself and one for Yoko Ono. “ Since my inauguration to arts I started feeling a bond with Yoko Ono. A love that can be only described as maternal bond. The way I can elaborate, at best, would be through how I feel about V-2 Missiles. Still that wouldn't be so comprehensive either. Where I was born, we bury children next to or on top of their mothers. Maybe I wasn't born at the same place as my de-facto mother, but at least now we can be buried at the same place. ” * Gokay Atabek is an intermedia artist and a member of VØLKSAMT!, a collective serving to burn the final bridges of art. thebalconythehague.com/18-Gokay-Atabek Solo

2018Cachee Rem Artspace. Istanbul, Turkey As a part of a group exhibition, ":|" was erected at REM Artspace (IST). A screen contained in a metal frame took visitor's faces and made them the center piece of a brutalist portrait, at the price of their faces being archived in a server. Yet vox populi triumphed again. By simply not visiting the exhibition the audience transformed the work; from a computer program designed to recognize faces into a program that only recognizes walls. The resulting datapool, "Greatest Archieve of the Same Wall" is presented as 8000 distinct images composited into a ISO/IEC 19794-5:2005 Biometric of G. Atabek, our local representative at the time. Fire! of Unknown Origin V2_ Lab for the Unstable Media Rotterdam, Netherlands v2.nl/works/fire-of-unknown-origin Infrasonic waves are roars of the Earth; generated by the shifts in tectonic plates, volcanic eruptions, ocean currents, and meteorological events. It is a spectrum of sound that is not directly perceivable to us, yet traces of our presence are encoded within it. Nuclear blasts, wind turbines, freighter shipping and other feats of moving gargantuan things around produce signatures of infrasound unique to the Anthropocene. Another emitter of infrasound, wildfires, presents a paradox; while arson is a human-induced “anthropogenic hazard”, wildfires can equally erupt without direct human intervention, however exacerbated as the consequences of the human-caused climate crisis. Observing a wildfire up close is an (anecdotally) anxiety-inducing and gut-wrenching experience, extending beyond just fright or despair. A forest fire operates as a self-sustaining feedback system: as winds carry the flames, rising hot air generates its own currents, culminating in a fiery storm. The lack of oxygen in the air, coupled with disorienting air pressure changes, transforms the experience into a peculiar physical affliction. G. Atabek’s first encounter with a wildfire was in the summer of 2023 near the coastal city of Canakkale, Turkey. This strong physical experience was what inspired the project. It is this aforementioned physicality that the project tries to explore and re-create. The departure point of the project is developing 3 fundamental tools that can listen to, interpret, and “reproduce” air movements surrounding fire. Inspired by field-recording as an artistic medium and informed by musique concrete, the final outcome of the project will be a fixed media piece presented as an installation; showcasing the unique tools developed and the recordings made by these tools.

Amplified Fencer V2_ Lab for the Unstable Media Rotterdam, Netherlands v2.nl/works/amplified-fencer Amplified Fencer is a research project that investigates the implicit choreography of a fencing match. The fencer’s movements are dissected via motion sensors, formatted with the help of a neural network and remapped to an experimental audio synthesizer. Inspired by late 19th century chronophotography experiments, the explosive compositions of the fencer are displayed stretched out over time, with artificial-intelligence filling in the gaps where recording equipment (or the fencer) falls short.

DNK Ensemble presents: Intona Re-enacted V2_ Lab for the Unstable Media Rotterdam, Netherlands v2.nl/events/dnk-ensemble-presents-intona-re-enacted/?searchterm=dnk For the original 1991 work, Raaijmakers heated, boiled, and pierced his microphones to capture their ‘dying breath’ within a musically theatrical context, he even dissolved them in acid. Doing so, he mobilized the microphone as an instrument in and on itself, disconnected from its common reproductive function. In a four-day reworking Intona Re-enacted, the DNK Ensemble investigates this unique performance. Following an opening performance, the space and the materials used will be slowly transformed and processed into an exhibition. Here, Raaijmakers' points of departure regarding the microphone and its cultural and musical function, serve as guideline for a series of performative and transformative processes.
