With graphic designer Selina Landis, I developed the entire identity campaign for the Open Day 2022 of the KABK. (concept, development, execution). We gathered different types of elements and materials (scan, paintings, ceramics, plaster) to create the symbolic visual of a hatching egg. Our aim was to push the limit and expectation of what an identity is and to experiment with different types of mediums that I personally use in my practice. Hence the ceramic typeface.

Actually displayed in The Architecture of Staged Realities, Het Nieuwe Instituut, Rotterdam. Sketches, stories and maps are the main tools Walt Disney had at his disposal to inagine and create his worlds. In this video, Clara Lezla explores the promises and imagery hidden in these maps. Based on an interview with french geographer Jean-Francois Staszak, she presents an anthology of the map as a ‘portal’ to other worlds. Using the map as a vehicle for dreaming about and telling stories, the video questions the notion of simulacra (copies with no real originals) as the most important component of our reality. Here: artwork created for the project For her master's thesis at the Vienna University of Applied Sciences, together with the Association of Vienna Youth Centers (Bos5), Theresa Scherrer created a platform where the viennese youth could express their opinion freely. Scherrer used the simple but brillant idea of the pizza box as a medium with the lid as a place for messages, to spread these opinions throughout the city. With the young Viennese students, she created more than 50 designs from August to December 2020. Each of them represented a personal attitude, a story, or an appeal to society. She also asked different designers and artists (myself included) to illustrate some of these "life advices". The results of this collaboration were silkscreened on pizza boxes and, in cooperation with surrounding pizzerias, will be distributed throughout Vienna. Commissionned artwork by artist RJM van Heyden for the release of her music tape « Throw Down the Gauntlet » on her feminist label Hunger! The artwork appears like a frieze recalling medieval ornaments or historical hieroglyphes. The long format creates a timeline displaying different scenes of creatures preparing for war. It is an interpretation of the ambient sound called dungeon synth that you can hear on the tape.

\Flag for Trixie Flag Show exhibition. I wanted to question the flag as a symbol of identification and revendication. Trixie being a fluid space where a lot of different artwork are being produced by its members and a lot of projects are organized, I wanted to illustrate it by making an image that could not be crystallized into one thing. I created an illustration of a shadow mysterious like a cartoon silhouette, giving the flag a humoristic and spooly tone, playing with the imagination of the viewer and asking him to relate from different childhood cartoon memories. Uncertain, ever changing...and fun!

The papier mache bench sculpture is inviting the viewer to enter the realm of fantasy, fun fair and travel. It takes its reference into an old funfair moving ride and ressemble a faery cave woman refuge. Installation work for Graduation Project consisting of a video work and a papier mache bench sculpture. With her video installation work, “Hypnosis of the Stolen painting - The Narrators ”, Clara lezla questions the world as a staged reality through three chapters unfolding as the inception of three «world- gates». These distinct, yet visually echoing «scenes » recall the principle of the portal, the “trompe l’oeil”, the facade, the Hollywood set, the movie-staged landscapes and first and foremost the Funfair Ride. Each world gate open up on different mechanism related to world building; from the popular belief of the Circus tent to the iconic object of the map, passing by the immersive technique of oral storytelling...The video dwells into the fabricated stories that build our society and challenge the notion of fiction as main component of our reality. Helped by interviews conducted with a Circus Artist, and d Dungeon and Dragon Player, Lezla researches the different ways in which the creation of fiction influence our perception of our environment (landscape, architecture and leisure) and how fiction is performed in our daily life. The camera guides the viewer through the limbo of these stages, helped by a script and a soundscape enriched with popular references. The video work demonstrate a capacity for details through animated allusion borrowing from the real cinematic world as well as user interface phenomenons.

2021De architectuur van een wondere wereld Het Nieuwe Instituut Rotterdam, Netherlands Walt Disney’s fantasies have grown from temporary distractions on the cinema screen into defining influences on global pop culture. The cartoonist, along with the empire he founded, has won both praise – for his technological innovations and the apparent simplicity and recognisability of his storytelling – and notoriety. The ingenuity with which he seamlessly entwines fairy tales and reality is accompanied by a compelling and one-sided conception of what the resulting wonderful worlds – and their inhabitants – should look like. Walter Elias Disney (1901–1966) created on- and off-screen fantasy worlds in which viewers and visitors can temporarily escape everyday reality. His “wonderful world” had a modest beginning in the 1930s with cartoons and animated shorts but, with the creation of full-length films, theme parks, resorts and cruise vacations, it mushroomed into a global media empire over the following decades. The staging of an alternative reality was not confined to the movies and the Disneyland parks. With every step in the development of the company, the image of Walt, and his Walt Disney Company, has been carefully cultivated and expanded. That constructed impression – of Disney as a carefree genius, the “father of the middle class”, whose company produces feel-good environments for the whole world – has a downside. With a blend of nostalgia, utopianism, simplification and cuteness, Walt Disney entices his audiences to immerse themselves in a world where reality and fiction merge. Inspired by European literature and architecture, Disney, known as the embodiment and champion of the American Dream, underlies a highly specific and limited type of cultural production. This propagates a largely uniform identity, with the traditional white family at its heart. The animated characters and storylines affirm and reinforce gender roles and racial stereotypes, helping to normalise discrimination and the exclusion of everyone who is “different”. As part of this project, Het Nieuwe Instituut and the curator are actively committed – including by providing work assignments – to making room for voices and perspectives that are insufficiently represented, or deliberately marginalised, in Disney’s oeuvre and legacy. wonderewereld.hetnieuweinstituut.nl/en Group
