Cristina Lavosi (Italy, 1993) is a research-based visual artist and filmmaker. Her practice is concerned with investigating power structures and challenging institutions of violence. In particular, her artistic research explores how visual and verbal language is constructed and performed by Western political and cultural institutions to shape dominant narratives, impose archetypes of normative existence, and legitimise power structures. Her artistic methodology mostly involves critically analysing and counteracting Western prevailing systems of political organisation, especially in areas such as (re)production labour and the criminal justice system. Over the years, she focused on subjects such as the imposition of isolation and exploitative systems of accumulation within advanced capitalist economies and neoliberal societies; the mainstream construction of distorted definitions of policing; and the use of a love rhetoric to conceal police systemic violence and the criminalisation of precarious groups. With a focus on dismantling hegemonic narratives and ideologies, she is also committed to a transformative approach to storytelling and to finding ways to effectively propose alternative social imaginaries, mostly making use of fiction and re-enactment in her audio-visual work. Being directed at critiquing and opposing constructed notions, her practice is based on the deconstruction and re-contextualisation of visual and textual materials, resulting in time-based media and audio-visual installations. Her artistic language encompasses digital and analogue video, archival footage, photography, and print.

While undergoing a process of “desensitisation” to suppress their instinctive flight response to fear in urban contexts, horses become a means to impose a disciplinary power in return. The re enactment aims to critically deconstruct the ambiguity and fiction inherent to the depiction of police horses as stronger, more “efficient” weapons to fight crime and yet more “humane”, “natural” tools to provide security. This ambiguity comes back in the mundane objects used for horses' trainings. While being extracted from playful contexts, their purpose is to simulate situations of violence that horses will face in their policing duties.
