I hosted this symposium for the second event in the Positions: Afterlives series. In Papiamentu ‘mondongo’ means intestines and bellies of cattle and pigs. With this title I want to refer to the inner being. Maybe not the soul but the gut. That which fuels us and lives deep within. Through this symposium I want to bring what lies deep in the inner to light, and give it new life. - It is what I need to finally make peace with the language this kingdom casted upon me

This performance was done during the closing event for the almost 12 month long exhibition, Knowing Cotton Otherwise, at the Fashion for Good Museum (2023). As a way to symbolically and tangibly document the movements and activities during the exhibition, the space was cleansed with salt water with the use of cotton rags, under the chanting of living water.

A performance where positive energy is cultivated, harvested and consumed. During the witching hour positive energy can be harvested. This energy is cultivated with the use of salt shrines. Offerings are placed in the shrines as tribute to the spirit of desire. When the water evaporates the positive energy will collect on the offering, manifested as salt crystals. Once the crystals bloom, they are ready to be harvested. The rootworker makes a tea made from ‘yerba di hole’, African- or Holy basil, and collects the salted offerings to stir in the tea. The positive energy can be consumed this way, manifesting the will of the spirit of desire.

This work was inspired by the poem “Angelitos negros" by Andrés Eloy Blanco. With this sculpture I strived to create a representation of a black angle. This angle, or saint is a deity of the diaspora. Representing what I believe to be important pillars in my community. A pillar dedicated to everything we learned from all of those we have lost.

In an effort to own and come to terms with this identity I chose to make my own Dutch flag and baptize it in the North sea. Symbolically washing out the blood and starting new. With an image of a Dutch man that I could comfortably identify with.
