Áron Lődi (b.1996) is a Hungarian visual artist based in The Hague. He documents contemporary horror stories of the accelerating decline of late capitalism, imperialism, and ideological polarization. The interconnected elements of his multidisciplinary practice draw from architectural ruins, the Eastern Bloc's inherently weird and haunted landscapes, industrial transformation, propaganda and internet memes, and gothic fiction. Lődi's work depicts a world where impending doom and utopias run parallel.
In his recent project Metallurgia, Lődi explores Hungary’s haunting past and various future visions through the country’s largest steel plant amid a financial and identity crisis. He engages in the aesthetics of industrial gothic and theories of new materialism to reveal the (spectro-) political potential of the paradox temporalities and identities of the plant and the country’s strongest labor union, opposing the dominant dystopic horizon with speculative emancipatory perspectives.
Lődi graduated with an MFA from the Dirty Art Department at Sandberg Instituut, Amsterdam (2023). He is a founding member of the Budapest-based U&K Magazine publishing project and part of the artist duo ALAGYA. In 2022, he initiated a para-academic program titled Contaminating The Soil That Nurtures Greed focusing on Europe’s east-west ideological divide through the lens of artistic strategies. In 2024, he co-organised the MetaforumX: Permacrises conference at Trafo Gallery, Budapest. His works were shown at Jedna Dva Tri Gallery, Prague (CZ), A Promise of Kneropy, Bratislava (SK), Vunu Gallery, Kosice (SK), Ultrastudio Gallery, Pescara (IT) and Light Art Museum, Budapest (HU), Semester9, Amsterdam (NL), and 1111 Gallery, Budapest (HU). In 2023, he was a fellow at Akademie Schloss Solitude, Stuttgart (DE).
