Sunsum is an artistic exploration of the self and how I, as a Ghanaian artist, perceive myself in the world and how the world perceives me. On a macro level, the project explores the larger questions of where we fit in as individuals and who we are in relation to ourselves and others. Sunsum is a Ghanaian word in the Twi language. It indicates the connection between the body and the soul. The Sunsum project examines the lives and factors that shape the identities of the Ghanaian. How do Ghanaians see themselves in the world, and what is their social identity? How do the societies they live in see them, and how do they perceive these societies?

Criminalisation is the inability to separate a person from criminality based on their group identity. In this case, black male criminalisation is the inability to separate black males from criminals. Through photography, augmented reality, film, and 3D printed sculpture, the audience is invited to look deeper into our interpersonal experiences and the mental processes that inform them. Depicting black characters reflects the desire, born of my own experiences, to bring to the fore the inadequate and troubling representations of black people in today’s media and throughout history. SILHOUETTE investigates and displays representations of the misrepresentation of black men that has permeated our public consciousness. Decontextualising affirmations, illustrating what it is like to inhabit white-dominant spaces—nuanced statements about simply being.

Although hair is a physiological phenomenon, it is also a social one. Hair is an object of intense elaboration and preoccupation in almost all societies. Hairstyles and rituals surrounding hair care and adornment convey powerful messages about a person's beliefs, lifestyles, and commitments. Inferences and judgments about a person's morality, sexual orientation, political persuasion, religious sentiments, and, in some cultures, socio-economic status can sometimes be surmised by seeing a particular hairstyle.

Criminalisation is the inability to separate a person from criminality based on their group identity. In this case, Black male criminalisation is the inability to separate Black males from criminals. These stereotypes are evident when women clutch their purses when they see a Black man or when Whites scurry to the other side of the street or out of purview of an approaching Black man. The hoodie has become a highly politicised and racialised item of apparel. In the context of police harassment and brutalism – which is widely framed as black men issue, both the hoodie and the black male wearing it have come to be seen as emblems of violence: the image of a black guy in a hoodie as a violent thug has permeated our public consciousness. SILHOUETTE, is about investigating the many layers and nuances behind the hoodie as a socio-political storyteller, and the broader cultural and sociological symbol behind the clothing for people of colour in identity projection and perception.

2022DIPO Galerie Ron Mandos Amsterdam, Netherlands Dipo is a rite that transitions a female from childhood into womanhood. In both the Shai and Krobo communities, going through the Dipo rite is a prerequisite in becoming a woman who is capable of fully participating in the community, being a wife, and having a family. In ancient times, those who did not do it or got pregnant before the Dipo rite was done were considered outcasts—some banished from the community. The Dipo girls are dressed in beautiful clothes from waist to knee level. The upper part of the body is exposed and decorated with markings and colourful assortments of beads, which the Krobo people are renowned for. During the rituals, the Dipo girls appear bare breasted. This can be juxtaposed against the widely held views in contemporary Ghana that nudity is ‘indecent’ and ‘improper’. DIPO by Kwadwo Amfo explores the tension between nudity, sexuality, and the Ghanaian sense of modesty. ronmandos.nl/exhibition/kwadwo-amfo-dipo/ Solo
