Her Forest, Tearless as Stone Romagna-Toscana, Italy enricocarpi.com/her-forest-tearless-as-stone Between hills, forests and flowers is where my grandmother grew up. Her mother passed away when she was sixteen. Five years later her father was murdered. How, where and why remains a mystery. Shortly after, she and her younger brother left - leaving behind not only her home, but also her youth. I grew up mythicising her stories from those places, where long, hard days of physical labour could not harden their souls. Instead, what always remained was gratitude for life. More than sixty years after her father was murdered, I revisited the area where she grew up, sometimes alone, sometimes together with her. I give voice to the landscape that shaped my grandmother as a person. In doing so, a deep affection for those places grew in me. Only the flowers, trees, sticks and stones still preserve within them the truth. They are the same flowers, trees, sticks and stones that allowed me to understand her resilience and strength, which I have admired all my life.

Silent Fall Mandritsa, Bulgaria enricocarpi.com/silent-fall Mandritsa it’s a village located in the southeast of Bulgaria, once part of the silk way. In the past was known for the production of this last one because of the large number of mulberry trees present in the area. Most of the people in the village were working as silk producer and their houses, built with the local mud had a special construction for this main activity. Nowadays no one in the village is producing silk, the houses made of mud are falling without leaving any trace. Only 20 people are living there, the two youngest ones are 40 years old. I spent around a month in the village, every morning driven by the song of the birds I was walking around this island inside the valley, where the gate is marked by a red and white iron railing on the side of a bridge. Through this project, I want to address the depopulation of this rural village at the end of the Rhodope Mountains and make visual time sculpted by the falling of light over what rests on the landscape.

Mountains Never Meet but People do Friesland, Netherlands enricocarpi.com/mountains-never-meet-but-people-do 32,5 km of bridge is protecting the Netherlands from flooding, connecting North Holland to the region called Friesland. Once I crossed the dam I found myself in a place where time seemed to have another value and life’s rhythm proceded in harmony with nature. Desirous to have a better understanding of the country where I have been living for the past two years, and seeking encounters with people along the path I let the road guide me through new horizons and the stranger's stories. The countryside and its infinite flat lands, the smell of the soil, the fog, the sea, farmers, and fishermans, eventually all those elements reminded me of situations where I grew up. I then realized that perhaps sometimes we set off in search of different landscapes, experiences, encounters, and like in my case, we end up finding places and situations that strangely remind us, and of home.
