Microclimates Take Over

Annechien realises art and film projects around microclimates. A microclimate is a small area that differs from it's surrounding area. With these projects and art installations, we encourage people to change their social and ecological environment.

Since the late 1990s, urban agriculture and communication between people and their environment have been central to my work. For example, art project 'The mobile allotments' works alienating and encourages visitors to reflect, act and collaborate. I have pioneered this kind of projects and came to an overarching theme in my work of which urban agriculture is part; that of the (micro) climate. My work is multidisciplinary and for my projects I often collaborate with other artists or professionals from various professional disciplines. Climate change is a fact. Urban agriculture / food themes from an (urban) climate perspective are new and deserves immediate and long-term attention given the urgency of climate change. People can do something about the climate in their own environment, which is why the Laboratory for Microclimates(LfM) was founded. Since 2010 I work together with filmmaker Gert-Jan Gerlach. By working together we can simplify a complicated message and make it accessible and transparent to larger groups. This way we stimulate the discussion that can arise from this. We have combined our expertise in LfM to activate people's thinking about their nearby social ecological environment (recognizing a microclimate) and the climate as a greater whole.
